                                Computer Crime Case (or Legal Case) Study

Requirements:

 

1.        Search some web sites possibly including WWW.CyberCrime.GOV for Computer crime cases and

     WWW.EFF.ORG for Legal cases.

2.        If you open above DOJ site which is the home page of CCIPS (Computer Crime and Intellectual

        Property Section) of Department of Justice, you can find a lot of Computer Crime Cases,

     Intellectual Property Crime Cases or CyberCrime Documents that include a lot of Press Releases

     from US  Attorney's Office on the computer crime cases.

   3.     If you open the EFF site (Electronic Frontier Foundation: Defending Freedom in the

           Digital World), you will see tabs like “OUR WORK” and “PRESS ROOM.”

           The former tab shows Legal Cases in which EFF has been involved and White Papers, 

           and the latter tab has Press Releases, among many other interesting links.  

   4.     You can also look at "WWW-Swiss.ai.mit.edu/6.805/readings-general.html" for some

           noteworthy yet old cases.

   5.     Study two computer crime cases or two legal cases.

   6.     If you study the former then turn in a report that describes (in 3-4 doubly-spaced pages)

               a. Summary of the crime

               b. Defendant(s) and their motivations, if known.

               c. The damage(s) suffered

               d. US Laws/regulations that were violated and the punishments sentenced.

               e. Your opinion on (i) why you really think the crime has to be condemned and

                   (ii) how similar crimes can be prevented.

               f. What you think you really have learned from this study.

               g. The extent of Independent Study you did in writing this report.

               h. List of References.

   7.     If you study legal cases then turn in a report that describes (in 3-4 doubly-spaced pages)

               a. Summary of each case

               b. what are the controversial issues in each case.

               c. US Laws/regulations that are involved in each case.

               d. EFF's opinion and your own opinion on each case.

               e. What you think you really have learned from this study.

               f. The Extent of Independent study you did in writing this report.

               g. List of References.

   8.      Your paper should have pertinent headings.

   9.      Additional requirement:

               (a)           If you are taking the online course, then  you also need to submit a powerpoint document

                               consisting of about 10-12 slides with your narratives recorded to substitute for the in-class

                               presentation.

                               This is very IMPORTANT because it is to satisfy one course objective of the  

                               communication skill (oral and written) improvement.

               (b)           Else, you will present your report to the class on the day when the report is due just

                               like other previous reports.
