COSC1371                                          Project-2                         Due: Tuesday, 9/20/2011

Web Search and Calculator for Some Statistical Calculations

Objectives:

1.       Create and save a simple webpage that can only be opened locally from your USB. This webpage only contains your welcome message and hyperlinks to some of your favorite websites including an interesting image such as the Eiffel Tower.

2.       Create and save a Word document containing a table of Texas County populations (of 2012 estimated) sorted in descending order of population. So, counties with more populations will appear before those with less.

3.       Experiment the Calculator and its Statistics View in calculating some statistics involving the ten most populous Texas county populations. These statistics include Sum, Average, Unbiased Standard Deviation and Biased Standard Deviation.

4.       Explore US Census Bureau Website in finding the population percent change over the last ten years and major cities of those ten most populous Texas Counties. For example, in Harris County, population increased by as much as 20.3% over the last ten years and major cities are Houston, Sugar Land and Baytown.

Steps:

1.       Creating and saving a simple webpage

a.       Search the WWW for an interesting image such as the Eiffel Tower (Google will do a good job) and Copy its URL.

b.       Open Word

c.       Type a welcome message and Select Insert Tab and then select HyperLink.

d.       In the ensuing Dialogue Box, you enter the Name of the link and the URL itself (which you either copied or remember such as http://www.lamar.edu/ or my.yahoo.com).

e.       Save this file as a webpage under the name of MyWebPage.htm  (you do not have to type the extension, as usual!!!) inside your folder COSC1371.

2.       Creating and saving a Word Document that contains nothing but a table of estimated 2012 populations of all Texas counties sorted in descending order of county population.

a.       Try Google by entering “Texas County Populations” or directly open www.dshs.state.tx.us/chs/popdat

b.       Copy and paste the ensuing table with all Texas County populations (estimated 2012) into a Word document. This table is in alphabetical order of county names.

c.       To find the ten most populous counties, sort the table using the Sort button on the Paragraph Group of the Home Tab of the Word window.

d.       Save the sorted table and the document under the name of TXCountyPop2012 inside the same folder COSC1371.

3.       Finding out and recording on a sheet of paper (1) population percent increase of the last ten years and (2) some major metropolitan areas of ten counties with the most populations.

For this, you can explore the home page of the US Census Bureau. If you click the QuickFacts button after selecting Texas in a pull-down menu, you will get State & County QuickFacts Table for Texas that lets you select a Texas county in a pull-down menu, which will give some detailed population data of the selected county including its metropolitan areas.

4.       Calculating and recording on a separate sheet of paper (1) the sum, (2) average, (3) the unbiased standard deviation and (4) the biased standard deviation of those ten county populations.

For this, you can use the Statistics View of the Calculator available inside the Accessories folder which lets us enter so many data items before performing a statistical function on the list of data items being entered.

Also, calculate and record the percentage points by which the larger S.D. of the two is larger than the smaller of the two. For this, you can use the MS and MR buttons, for Memory Save and Memory Retrieve, respectively.

5.       On the same sheet of the paper, calculate and record an estimated hourly population increase of the USA and of the whole world, respectively. For this, you can use the Population Clock of the US Census Bureau HomePage.

6.       That’s all. Enjoy the project.

Requirement:

Turn in (1) a USB that contains one webpage (MyWebPage.htm) of Step-1 above and one Word document (TXCountyPop2012.docx) of Step-2 above and (2) two sheets of paper with steps 3-5 recorded on both inside a Manila envelope as usual.
